Our class Saw a Need to Expand out "Green space" and replace a dead tree in the front of our school. Students went outside and surveyed the area. They cleared the space, decided on the size of the new garden box, and then came inside to plan and order materials. they researched and priced lumber online, figured out the dimensions and quantity needed, and even called local businesses to price out topsoil and ask questions.
Once we were ready to build we identified several steps that needed to be shared and divided the work over time. First, we needed to clear the landscaping rocks to the sides. Then, the would need to cut through the old landscaping fabric and dig the holes for the support posted. While we all took turns sharing the jobs and assembling the garden box. it was awesome because we all used the screwdriver to put in the screws and assemble the sides. Finally, we worked as a team to place and level our garden box.
a few days later our four yards of topsoil we ordered arrived and that needed to be moved into the box. Our four yards of topsoil arrived and we all chipped in using shovels and buckets to get it moved. it was a lot of work, but we didn't mind taking the time out of our morning to finish the job we started!
